Another morning, another groaning wake-up as my muscles complain. Angelica barely grunts as she rolls over on the pillow beside me, stretching her back across it and showing her fluffy belly. Her normally pristine fur is purple, green, and slightly sizzled this morning. Yesterday’s countercurses really worked well.

“I have enough magic now. Do you want me to fix your fur?”

Yess. She says in my mind.

I run a hand over the fur and return it to its normal appearance. All this practice is paying off. I’m learning so much about counter curses that I never imagined would be possible.

“Thank you,” she murmurs and curls back into a ball to sleep.

I scratch her behind the ears and head to the bathroom to start my day.

“Day twenty-four, are you ready?” Gavin asks from the mirror while I brush my teeth. I glare at him in response and open the medicine cabinet so he can get a view of the tile wall.

That’s right. Twenty-four days of Green’s ridiculous training. And we just reached halfway.

“Don’t be like that. Yesterday was a pain. I was worried about you.”

“I could have been in the shower.”

“Then the mirror would have steamed up and I wouldn’t have seen anything anyway.”

I continue brushing my teeth and use my magic to make the bed around Angelica, careful to not disturb her rest. Using magic to do all of this has become second nature. Will I be able to return to normal when I get back?

Will I even want to? I guess that’s the true question. The hell with it. Normal is overrated anyway.

I flip the mirror back and see that he’s still waiting for me, but there’s a worried expression on his face. “What’s wrong?”

“Don’t you think it’s been too easy the past few days?”

“What fresh hell is this?” I ask as I wipe the enchantment from the mirror.

Is he a glutton for punishment or what? Can’t we have some easy days? As I get dressed, I realize that he’s right. The curses were easy to deflect now and we’re perfecting our cooking style as a team. A mix of Mediterranean and Blood Moon Kitchen Witchery. Full-flavored cuisine with a hint of dark and ominous seasoning.

We both exit our rooms and arrive at the kitchen to see a massive list of things to make.

I glance at him and he shrugs. “Did you peek?”

“No. I had no idea it would be like this.”

I narrow my gaze at him and take our leftovers out of the stasis spell room. Our nighttime experiments always create extras so we can get started quickly. Early on, we found out that the penalties would increase if we weren’t finished with our tasks in a five-hour timeframe...the length of time for the Iron Cauldron finals.

Each day is a new mountain of food to climb.

Green appears in front of us. I almost prefer his younger, calmer self. This older version never has good news.

“Today, we will create our first five-course meal using the things you’ve learned so far.”

I nod slowly.
